Thank you to the many folks who took part in the special session on
fairness and equity in EDM research at EDM 2021! If you're interested in

Based on the energy at that special session, we'll be forming a working
group related to these issues, moving from that initial discussion to
refining our ideas and taking action. We'll be thinking broadly about steps
to try to increase the positive impact of EDM research on equity in
education and to minimize and recognize potential harms and problematic
practices. I anticipate that much of the work
will be able to be done asynchronously to accommodate different schedules
and timezones, although I hope the working group will also serve as a way
to foster community among those taking part.
We would love to get lots of folks involved in this effort, and we welcome
participation from everyone. We value different viewpoints, experiences,
and identities, and if you're interested in fairness, bias, equity,
diversity, and/or inclusion in EDM, we'd love to have you. You don't need
to be working specifically on fairness issues in your research, or to have
previously been heavily involved in the EDM conference or in a leadership
position; new perspectives are particularly welcome!
