Database and Spreadsheet

Here is a database for third graders (English). Begin the unit by having
students learn about folklore and its origins. Children will read and analyze
several versions of the same tale (for example, Cinderella) and compile a
database based on the information collected. The database form could include
the following fields: Title, Author or Collector, Country Origin, Year
Released, Location (found where: library, Internet, etc.), and Words and
Phrases Specific to that Country. The students can also include the following
fields: Statements from the narrator such as ?Once upon a time? or ??happily
ever after,? Good versus evil, Magic, Personified animals or objects, Imaginary
beings such as witches or fairies and a moral. Students will place a number one
(1) in each of the fields if the version contains that element. The students
can then do a number of things with this database such as: sort alphabetically
by title in order to determine most commonly used title, sort alphabetically by
country to see which country has the most versions, find the average year that
versions of "Cinderella" have be released, discover which fairy tale elements
were used the most, create filter to see how many of these tales were found in
the library/on the Internet/ or other resources, graph results of fairy tale
elements, create Venn diagrams and draw conclusions.

This spreadsheet activity can be used with students in grades 5-7 (Math and
Physical Fitness). At the beginning of the year, the students will set physical
fitness goals and monitor them over the school year (or any other length of
time). The students will use a spreadsheet to track their progress. Once a goal
is reached, a new one is set. First the students will set a physical fitness
activity goal with the help of the physical education teacher (distance run,
sit ups, push ups, etc.), and generate a set of activities that will help them
reach their goal. On the spreadsheet, they will record their practice
activities and progress?making sure to check their progress each trimester.
When finished, the students will print out line charts that show their
performance, as well as analyze their progress.
