Stacey Rowles=20 Responses to the Three Power Point Articles July 21, 2003 Article # 1 PowerPoint No, Cyperspace Yes Summary: This article was primarily about why power point should not be = used in the classroom. It discusses the fact that power point is way to = teacher focused. It does this by using five characteristics of good = teaching pedagogy. These are a student centered learning environment, = student controlled material, content delivery should be based on student = knowledge and driven by frequent formative feedback, courses should be = structured so that students can interact with material, and all of this = should be accomplished in the most parsimonious way. These five characteri= stics were than used to compare electronic communication to PowerPoint. = The author had nothing positive to say about PowerPoint, and nothing = negative to say about electronic communication. His main goal in the = article was to prove that PowerPoint presentations used by the teacher are = too teacher centered. They do not focus on student learning. =20 Reaction: I was quite surprised that this article was written. I personally = felt that this article was bias. PowerPoint is only teacher centered, = based on the individual who is using it. In many cases they offer just as = much possibility for student interaction and participation, as other ways = of teaching. Besides this, it gives students something bright and = colorful to look at. My other concern with this article is that he made = electronic communication seem like the way to go. But, isn't it true that = networks can go down, and communication over the computer can prove to = have problems as well, just like the author was suggesting can be the = problem with projector hook-ups. I think this article would have sat = better with me if the author also mentioned some of the great educational = aspects that PowerPoint has, as well as the drawbacks. It is true that = sometimes PowerPoint presentations can be boring and overused, besides the = fact that many people using them, don't know how to use them as a teaching = tool. This article was to bias, and a little dry in the writing. Article # 2 PowerPoint Is Not Evil Summary: The author of this article stressed the fact that it is not = necessarily the technology that is bad, but the way that the technology is = used. He stresses the fact that PowerPoint is similar to the other forms = of multimedia teaching that we use such as blackboards, whiteboards, = overhead projectors, photographic slides, flip charts, and other technologi= es. He then goes into the fictious character of Professor Pearl to show = how PowerPoint can be used positively. He mentions that PowerPoint can be = used to enhance lessons, while also making it easier for students to = access on line, as well as take notes easier. The author praises = PowerPoint's ability to stay organized and legible for students to read, = as well as helping time management. The author's main goal is to prove = the ways that "PowerPoint can help teachers help their students." Reaction: I enjoyed reading this article much more probably because I have a = strong opinion on the subject (which happens to agree much more with this = author, then the last). The author of this piece used humor when writing = the piece. This kept my interest, but also proved that PowerPoint can be = used positively in the classroom. He also mentions the fact that = PowerPoint is not perfect, and there are still some problems. I feel like = it is a good counterargument to article number 1. Article # 3 Ban It Now! Friends Don't Let Friends Use PowerPoint Summary: This article attempts to have people discontinue the use of = PowerPoint. The author goes through many points during this article. The = first is that PowerPoint is a monopoly. He describes the fact that = everyone is using it and that it is making all presentations look uniform. = He then continues to say that all presentations are using PowerPoint, = which makes them a bit boring to watch and listen to. He even goes so far = as to say that people are getting their beauty sleep while listening to = PowerPoint presentations. The author discusses the fact that PowerPoint = hides the author's voice and their point of view. Reaction: I don't agree with this author's point of view, however I did = enjoy reading the article due to the author's sense of humor. He does = make some good points including the fact that everyone is using it. Also = most people are using it incorrectly, which does make presentations/lecture= s boring. As I stated above I think PowerPoint has many wonderful options = for people, as long as they know how to use the program to fit their = lecture/presentation. This author should consider using PowerPoint in = more productive ways, then the ways he has currently seen it used. ------------------------------------------------------------ Class website: http://www.greece.k12.ny.us/taylor/suny/ ------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from this listserv, go to: //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=edi581 If you have any problems, send an e-mail to: JerryTaylr@xxxxxxx ------------------------------------------------------------
