Database Health Project: A health class of students could survey their High School (9-12) or Jr./Sr. High School Students (7-12) for use of drugs and tobacco in their school. Survey sheets would have already assigned random student number to protect confidentiality of students. Students would complete the survey and turn into a confidential location. Information that could be gathered: Student ID # from sheet, Student Age, Student Grade, Student Avg Grade in Primary Subject Areas, Check boxes to select the types of drugs such as tobacco, cocaine, speed, heroine, etc. Also they could have check boxes next to each type of drug to indicate tried a few times, monthly, weekly or daily habit. They could have check boxes for types of tobacco brands used to determine where advertising in their area might have affected their purchase decisions. Field for if student is involved in school related activities. Correlation to a student?s achievement in school and drug use could be determined. Use of a certain tobacco brand more prevalent than others. Age of students correlating to increased usage. Correlation between student involved in school related activities. This data could then be used to compare against national database information for students in this same age range to see if their school falls within the norm of the nation. Spreadsheet Math 8 Project: Students take a survey of students in their class based on how many family members each student has in their family. With teacher led instruction students organize data plot this on a spreadsheet. Column A represents the possible answers of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and above. Column B represents the total number of students found to fit in each category. With teacher led instruction students take this information and create a histogram chart and a pie chart of the information. With teacher led instruction students then can take the information and find statistical information such as Mean, Mode, Median, Range, Max, Min using function formulas provided in a spreadsheet program. They can repeat this process with another survey of class shoe sizes in categories of Size 5 and Under, Size 6, Size 7, Size 8, Size 9, Size 10 and Above. They would then repeat the process above of creating charts and formulas without teacher instruction in a lab environment to evaluate the learned process above. Analysis of the results from the formulas would then be documented by students and turned in along with the spreadsheet and charts. This would determine if students understood the results from these formulas and what the charts represent. -- Kim M.
