Covid-19 : Door Step Fraud and Scams

We know many of you will be worried about loved ones at the moment, and we are
aware of a number of local groups posting cards through the doors of the
elderly and vulnerable offering ‘good Samaritan’ services particularly around
shopping. In the vast majority of cases, this will be entirely legitimate and
well intentioned. However, this is also an opportunity for criminal activity as
we don’t know who is handing out these cards, or how the financial transaction
to pay for the shopping will be made.
South Yorkshire Police will not endorse or share any of these cards or details
of these ‘groups’.
Please consider the following key messages which have been produced by Action
Fraud and Age UK:
• Stop – never do anything you don’t want to or make any decisions on the spot
• Check – Check for ID but remember most of these are community volunteers so
wouldn’t necessarily have ID. There is no way of knowing whether they are
legitimate
• Ask – Ask someone you trust for a second opinion, or ask them if they can
provide the support you need.
• Mine – If they ask for your card or your pin, remember this is very personal
information which should not be shared
• Share – If you come across a scam, share your experience with others if
possible to prevent them from being scammed.
