Ah! "The Butterfly Lion" isn't girlie but still very beautiful and the
Moomin Troll series is pure imagination though there may be some Nordic
folklore or mythology in there.

Other books I remembered today are Lucy M. Boston Books, particularly "The
Children of Green Knowe"  and "the Chimneys of Green Knowe". Again, partly
ghost stories but just beautiful with some of the Olde Worlde Narnia charm.

I don't know the Butterfly Lion, in fact War Horse was my first Morpurgo. I
have also completely missed out on Moomintroll. I love Narnia, but only
managed one Harry Potter. My school reading is almost exclusively girlie.
