I'm awfully sorry to have to tell you this, but the manual is
wrong.
I had a VersaPoint for about a week, and we tried everything
to get the single-sheet feed to work. We finally called tech
support (not only for Freedom Scientific, but the company
who actually makes the Versapoints - I forget who they are)
and they both said they didn't understand why those
instructions were even in the manual, because the embosser
was designed for, and only operates well with tractor-feed
paper.
I returned it and bought an Everest instead. I've been very
happy with it. One of the best parts is being able to re-use
sheets of paper - sometimes for testing margins I've run the
same sheet through 2 or 3 times. It even does well with
ordinary notebook paper.
Besides, the time I had the Versapoint reminded me how
truly much I loathe tractor-feed paper.
