I set it up with the code [svsbl1] When I want to suppress it, I just
want that effect for 2 to 4 lines, then return to double spacing.

Ann,

You'll have to examine the codes to see how the double spacing is being 
accomplished.  Then, maybe we can figure out why you can't suppress it.
