Hi Caryn,
I've noticed the large gaps inside italicized passages in braille files, and
solved the problem by changing pixels per tab to 18. Thanks for discovering a
way to fix this annoying problem.

Hello Jean.
Thanks very much for pointing this out. I have tested this and found exactly
what you described.
When JAWS shows a gap between words on a braille display where there should
be just a space, that means that JAWS thinks there is a tab there rather than a
space. In fact, if you arrow over that character, JAWS is silent instead of
announcing it as "space." To eliminate the problem, you can go to the JAWS
Settings Center and increase the setting for pixels per tab.
With pixels per space set to 8, I experienced the problem when I had pixels
per tab set to 16 (which is the setting in the supplied dbtw.jcf file). But
when I increased pixels per tab to 18, I no longer experienced this problem.
I also found an alternative fix, leaving pixels per tab set at 16. When I
went to DBT's View menu and changed the current font to Print font, the gaps
changed to single spaces on the braille display. It is understandable that the
braille characters on the screen, using either Braille or SimBraille font, make
it harder for JAWS to judge the spacing.
Is the number of pixels between words greater when those words are within a
style like i-italic? I don't know. I had a sighted coworker look at my screen,
and no difference in spacing was apparent to him.
That's my report for now.
All the best,
Caryn

Attention to DBT
Recently, someone was having problems with emphasized text (italic, bold,
and underline) appearing with large gaps on a braille display after
translation. I have also noticed this problem, and have identified a consistent
pattern.
Using DBT 11.3 and 12.1
Using the English (UEB) BANA template
Using JAWS 18, and a Freedom Scientific Focus braille display
In a print file, when I apply the i-italic, bold or underline Styles, large
gaps appear on the braille display when I translate. When I directly apply the
[fts~i] and [fte~i], [fts~b] and [fte~b], and [fts~u] and [fte~u] codes, the
translation appears correct with no gaps. This is puzzling, because when I look
at the codes in those styles, they are the same. But somehow the results are
different in terms of the braille display.
Note that the braille is correct in both cases and embosses correctly. But
the gaps on the braille display are consistent with the use of the Styles.
In case this problem can be fixed, or in case someone just needs to know
how to work around this glitch, I’m sharing this information.
For Duxbury staff, I do have a sample file, but you might be able to
generate this on your own.
Jean
