Thanks for this info, Teri. I haven't tried putting in symbols your way so I'll try it next time. If you want a dot 4 to come out as a dot 4, use the q code. I get to it by hitting f5 and hit the letter q. It's the first q option in the list. You can also type the code in manually of course. When the q code is highlighted in the list, tab across to the edit box and put an at sign or shift 2 in there. If you want it to be followed by the number sign then you just put the number sign or shift 3 following the at sign in the edit box. Then hit enter. When the file is translated, the @# at number sign will be translated as dot 4 followed by dots 3-4-5-6.. Another thing to remember is to take the at sign or numbersign out of the actual text. The symbols will show up in the print document in the q code brackets e.g. [q~@] I have used this as a symbol indicator. When dbt sees some symbols e.g. plus it will automatically put the wordsfor them, but for others it won't. So if I wanted the plus symbol to show up I would enter in [q~@+] and when it was translated the q code would not show up, just the dot 4 followed by dots 3-4-6. If so, how did you do it? I tried several things I'd gleaned from the list and couldn't make it happen. Isn't there some setting in DBT that will keep the words like backslash and at from being spelled out? Ann Foxworth, Computer Braille Specialist Texas Commission for the Blind 4800 N. Perhaps someone can enlighten me? When I looked in the English Braille American edition, 1994, that was how I interpreted Rule VIII.b #31. It won't be the first time I got more confused by reading the rules... Thanks for any help.
