This brings back lots of memories. Gord Bonin went to school with my sister in
Red Deer. I played hockey against his brother.
I met Graham Light when I followed drag racing with my friend Gord Hearn, who
drove a
Gas Fueler and his brother worked as the lead mechanic on Lights crew.
The day of my Wedding to Laura, Gord and I spent the morning at Speedway Park
watching the “Can Am” series qualifying. Needless to say the afternoon Wedding
took preference for Gord (my best man) and I watching any more racing that day.
We have great memories from Speedway Park. It was sad to see it disappear.

For those who remember going to Edmonton Speedway Park for the drag races
and also for the Can Am Races, you may find this interesting.
There was actually a movie (Grade B) made called Fast Company, (directed by
David Cronenberg) that started with a drag race at Edmonton Speedway Park.
Funny, Chuck Chandler, the former radio DJ on Ched, is in the movie.(check
the credits at the end.)

To me the movie is a little chessy, but it won't be for some. I fast tracked
and skipped over at least two thirds of this movie.
Toward the end of the movie they return to Speedway Park and that's where
the movie "dramatically" ends.
I like the part towards the end where Lonnie steals the Funny Car back (from
Leon's Furniture Store on 137 Ave) and then pulls up on a street beside the
two guys drinking beer in a muscle car.
That was actually filmed on St. Albert Trail.

The film was mostly shot in Western Canada and Alberta, as Bonin puts it,
“So it would look like it was shot in the United States … so people would
want to watch it.
If it looked like it was shot in Canada, no one would have come to see it.”
