I met the owner of a battery powered Audi who had driven it from Newfoundland
to Victoria in less than 5 days, using non-Tesla DC chargers. He had a
co-driver, they only stopped to eat and charge. Shows it can be done with
any EV that has 400 km+ range.
I got by with 120 volt charging at home for the first 2 years, then installed
a 240 volt, 30 amp system. The upgrade was very worthwhile.

We just (end of April) took delivery of a new Volvo XC60 PHEV. It now has
6116 km on it, mostly highway driving, We were able to plug it in for most
short trips; for example, today we went in to Calgary for groceries, etc. and
put on about 65 km, and used 0.5 litres of fuel. We picked it up in
Edmonton, drove to Calgary – Edmonton – Calgary – Canmore – Calgary – Canmore
– Calgary – Campbell River – Calgary, plus local driving in all locations,
where we could often plug in at night for a partial charge. In the roughly
6000 km we have driven, we averaged about 5.3 l/100 km. This car can do 70
km on electric only. It takes only about 3 minutes to fill with gas (unless
you fill at Costco), and it has a 265 HP engine and a ~145 HP electric power
system; so with 410 HP it really goes! This is a relatively heavy car because
of the battery, and it has AWD. And I don’t have to look all over to find a
place to charge it; it gets nearly a full charge in 12 hours on a standard
110 V household connection. I haven’t tried a 240 V yet, but Volvo indicates
a full charge in under 3 hours. Fast DC charge is not necessary.
If all cars were made like this one, our vehicle carbon emissions would be
MUCH less! Plus the battery issues would be less onerous on the environment
(about 1/3 of full electric). Full electric is not ideal for the driving I
do.

Right, the numbers in that item sound like BS to me too. According to a
recent survey I saw quoted, 52% of car owners surveyed in many countries
across the world this year say they intend for their next car to be battery
electric. That continues a trend for increasing numbers of car buyers
intending to buy battery electric.
Tesla is introducing and researching battery chemistry with a view to using
more available materials. They ae also investing in mines and processing
facilities. BYD and other Chinese companies are gearing up electric car
production. Like it or not there will be rapid growth in the number of
electric cars on the road. Over 1,500,000 new EV’s will be sold this year.
They will get charged from renewable sources, mostly wind and solar, with
batteries to match supply and demand.
The amount of fossil fuel used for transportation will decline, giving us a
chance to survive the climate change it is causing.

While I buy that the tesla or any other EV is NOT as green as what many are
suggesting and that there are many many many reasons why it is completely
impractical to envision a world where all vehicles are electric, fact
checking of this bogus propaganda would fail. Caterpillar’s specs say a CAT
994 H burns 65 although some say 85 gallons per hour – 1800 gallons an hour
is NOT true. Depending on which of the Tesla batteries you have in your
vehicle, it could have up to 63 kg of lithium, 54 kg of graphite and also
amounts of nickel and/or cobalt. I highly suspect that there is no way that
500,000 pounds of earth (250 tons) needs to be processed to extract this
amount of mineral but I have not checked producing mines around the world.
When an argument makes sense without exaggeration, such hyperbole diminishes
the credibility of the argument.
My opinion anyhow…
