I read the post about the string with cans attached. My favorite training vehicle a while ago was a pair mowing machine. I'd have a veteran with a new horse. When I'd kick in the mower blade, the horse thought all hell broke loose - a horse's worst case senario. When the horse would spook, I'd pull him back and kick the mower out of gear. It went from pandemonium to silence. I'd go through that a few times, and as the pulling would start to tire the horse, he'd settle down and just do the job, ignoring the noise. Might not be the solution for a panicky horse, but for Fjords it was great, plus I got some mowing done.
