Thanks for the insight. I have an Eagle that I just love but it has brown painted metal! As such, I need to go russet. Pleasure turnout is not our greatest class. We are more the working class (in real life too) What brand of synthetic russet do you like? I am considering leather as well because it is beautiful and traditional. I purchased a used black set that came with K collars & the works for my first carriage. But due to age and wear, it had lost its luster. Thus it needs plenty more man (woman) hours of "reconditioning" to make it look decent. So biting the bullet for russet is ok! I just need to figure out which I like the best and to compare value. Value is more important than price. But the value vs price must also agree with my needs!! ADS pleasure shows and a few ADT. Does the synthetic hold up? I want the turn out to look nice so I could go leather/brass but that is more prep time. Leather/nickel might not look as good but less prep. Synthetic might not look as good but perhaps as mentioned, if presented well, could hold up?! I rushed on the purchase of my black pairs harness and I am very caution about my next harness purchase. So, thanks again for any advice! -----Original Message----- From: drivingpairs-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:drivingpairs-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of kathy robertson Sent: Tuesday, November 28, 2006 2:50 PM To: drivingpairs@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [drivingpairs] Russet Or Black Color of harness becomes a consideration when you will be judged on appearance and the Traditional rules for turnouts in Pleasure Driving shows. Hardware of harness should match hardware of carriage, though ALL harness should have steel tongues, never brass. Bits should be steel or silver looking metal. Brass bits are not strong or safe. Russet harness would be most correct with a natural wood colored vehicle that is trimmed in brown leather, brown metal points (hubs, iron around seat, etc). Black leather could be correct on a natural carriage with black points. Do check the rules, I know there were some tiny wording detail changes to allow russet leather on black trimmed, natural carriages. Used to be all brown or all black trim. Leather would be preferred and normally chosen over synthetic harness, because leather is a TRADITIONAL harness material in Pleasure Driving turnouts. Leather is just 'more' correct, they took the effort to have leather. Leather or synthetic would be equal in a performance class, where you would be graded on time and getting thru obstacles, not looks and Tradition. ADT is much less traditional, totally new activity! I am drawing a mental blank on rules regarding Presentation and if they have it?? I think they do, which would require harness to be well fitted, clean and neat. Shiny metal. Should be equal acceptance on leather or synthetic harness, both fine. Not graded on Pleasure/Tradition kind of thinking, more on safety and good fit of harness. Since most folks use a painted, Marathon type of modern vehicle, black harness is most often seen. I don't think you would be graded down for russet, but not commonly seen with painted vehicles. Russet does stand out on all but some Chestnut horses, so you need everything just right in fit, all adjustments. Very clean, dirt shows on Russet. You do want to appear all the same color Russet on a synthetic. Leather russets will have natural variations, but blend harmoniously. I think color choice would depend on your most preferred use of harness, and vehicle you will use most often. You will be counted down for synthetic in Pleasure turnout score if that is your favorite class. Black is never bad! BUT I would like to reopen the talk regarding RUSSET harness. I am looking for a russet pairs harness for pleasure shows and low level ADT.< ____________________________________________________________________________ ________ Do you Yahoo!?
