As I write this tonight, I have just read the first and last editorials in the
July-August issue of USA Equestrian Magazine. Both articles jumped out at me as
pertinent to the situation at hand, selection of a team to compete at the World
Pairs Championships.

In the IN STRIDE section, Alan Balch asks "impertinent questions". His second
question was, and I quote, "Isn't sporting participation an essential goal to be
encouraged, as much as winning in international competition?"

Mr. Balch goes on to describe the competitor who qualifies for an international
competition and then runs into a road block. Again I quote, "Whether because of
funding issues or not,, some of our more elite and experienced sport leaders
seek
to deny that competitor the opportunity to go abroad because 'they won't win'
and
'we can't have people competing internationally for the USA who don't win.'"

This is absurd. The job of any sport's governing structure should be to
maximize
opportunities for international competition, not minimize them and restrict them
to a pre-chosen few.

In the FINISHING TOUCH section Brian Sosby writes a stirring article on how 1
+ 1
can equal 3, if the pieces are put together correctly. In this case Mr. Sosby
was
pointing out that combining the features of USAEq and USET into the new United
States Equestrian Federation (USEF), can very well result in an organization
that
is better than the sum of it's parts. I certainly hope that Mr. Sosby is
correct.

In summary, it would appear that both Mr. Balch and Mr. Sosby had foreknowledge
regarding the Pairs Selection process. It is just this process, as it worked in
this case that Mr. Balch described above. If Mr. Sosby is correct, the old ways
will be discarded and selection processes that are fairer and more open will
result.

It would seem that the new executive committee, or whatever it is to be called,
has a sterling opportunity to start the new USEF out right.

Send the pairs to Europe.

Thank you.
