  I ran my horse barefooted in winter because the metal shoes attracted the
snow that balled up inside.  Without shoes I didn't have a problem.  We also
had a pad with a slight bubble in the middle to help pop out the snow balls.
We did have to be careful where we rode/drove.

me it's a choice between the possibility of a broken leg caused by the
combination of pony on stilts and frozen pockmarked mud, and extending the
driving season by leaving the shoes on...and perhaps eliminating the
possibility of having totally cracked up wet feet like we saw last spring
when the feet were just cracking off right and left and we couldn't get the
shoes back on until summer.  The best farrier I ever knew got really pissed
off if you pulled the shoes - he said he worked hard to get the feet the
right shape.  Now he is a tempermental guy and I don't know if he was right,
or just that it worked right for him, or if it was really the money (a lot
of farriers must starve in the winter) but he won't even bother with a
waiting list he's so busy.
