FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Julie Diamond Photos available 631-751-0066 X248 www.longislandmuseum.org Carriage Museum Gets a Makeover at The Long Island Museum Stony Brook, NY . August 10, 2006 . This fall, thanks in part to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), The Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages in Stony Brook, NY will unveil a major new exhibition exploring the forces - both the vehicles and the people who used them - that shaped the 19th century world of horse and buggy into our modern world of black-top and combustion engines. In addition, the new gallery will feature an authentic 19th century carriage shop, complete with original carriage-making machinery, tools and vehicle parts as well as interior walls from the original 1875 Graves Carriage Works carriage making shop, formerly located in Williamsburg, Massachusetts. In 2005 the NEH designated the Carriage Museum, which opened in 1987, a "We the People" project, making The Long Island Museum one of only 17 museums in its category to receive funding for implementation of exhibitions that year. In addition to the NEH grant, the museum received funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the conservation of the Graves objects and business records. This process will be recorded on video tape thanks to a grant from the Early American Industries Association. The Long Island Museum is located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, NY.
