#124 September 1, 2009 from http://www.don-guitar.com Online version: http://www.don-guitar.com/currentissue.html Archives: //www.freelists.org/archives/donspatch/ First word, from Don: I've been researching the prospects for producing revenue without having to drive to work. By which I mean, working online. Amazon's Mechanical Turk is, so far, the only prospect I've found. https://www.mturk.com/mturk/welcome I've figured out that by working really fast and being extremely accurate I could make as much as two or even three dollars an hour. Isn't that exciting? Yeah, well, I didn't think so either but it beats nothing. I'll keep looking and eventually I'll find something. Meanwhile, I can make a few dollars a day online, I enjoy the work and who knows, with experience my prospects may improve. Mom used to say: 'Can't' never could'. I can't argue with that now can I? See you next time, Don P.S. I've created a new page on the website where you can show off your photography if you like. Edit the photo for the web (no wider than 600 px and under 50k in size, or just send the photo and let us edit it for you, no big deal) and send it to us. Use the direct link from the contact page and attach your photo. Political quotes: The President has kept all of the promises he intended to keep. George Stephanopoulos I'm not a member of any organized political party, I'm a Democrat! Will Rogers If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one? Abraham Lincoln One thing I can say about George, he may not be able to keep a job, but he's not boring. Barbara Bush I do not like broccoli. And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli. George Bush To those of you who received honors, awards and distinctions, I say well done. And to the C students, I say you too may one day be president of the United States. George W. Bush If Thomas Edison invented electric light today, Dan Rather would report it on CBS News as 'candle making industry threatened'. Newt Gingrich Asking an incumbent member of Congress to vote for term limits is a bit like asking a chicken to vote for Colonel Sanders. Bob Inglis If elected, I will win. Pat Paulsen Never vote for the best candidate, vote for the one who will do the least harm. Frank Dane When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President; I'm beginning to believe it. Clarence Darrow Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge where there is no river. Nikita Khrushchev The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it. P.J. O'Rourke He knows nothing and thinks he knows everything. That points clearly to a political career. George Bernard Shaw Politics makes estranged bedfellows. Goodman Ace A bureaucrat is a Democrat who holds some office that a Republican wants. Alben W. Barkley Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. Lester Pearson There ought to be one day, just one, where there is open season on senators. Will Rogers Politics is perhaps the only profession for which no preparation is thought necessary. Robert Louis Stevenson The best reason I can think of for not running for president of the United States is that you have to shave twice a day. Adlai Stevenson Politics, n. Strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. Ambrose Bierce In Mexico, an air conditioner is called a 'politician,' because it makes a lot of noise but doesn't work very well. Len Deighton For fear of the newspapers politicians are dull, and at last they are too dull even for the newspapers. Gilbert K. Chesterton When a politician is in opposition he is an expert on the means to some end; and when he is in office he is an expert on the obstacles to it. Gilbert K. Chesterton It is terrible to contemplate how few politicians are hanged. Gilbert K. Chesterton The trouble with Senator Long is that he is suffering from halitosis of the intellect. That's presuming Senator Long has an intellect. Harold L. Ickes Mick Jagger and I just really liked each other a lot. We talked all night. We had the same views on nuclear disarmament. Jerry Hall If you liberals keep gettin' your way we're all gonna hear one big loud flush. The sound of the U.S. of A. goin' straight down the toilet. Don's been in cooking mode, which is fortunate because I'm in eating mode, packed on a few extra pounds already. Looks to be an early fall, folks. Let's see if the signs are prophetic. We've joined Aardvark, which we learned about through our friend Patrick Barden. Don was invited to become an 'aardvocate' and I should get my own invitation in the next day or two. The world's coolest computer, without software, is like a car without fuel. It might look great, but what can it do? It doesn't matter who produces the software you love and use regularly, the developers of that software need and deserve your support. A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox: New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the unwary. Use a 'throw away' email address to register, and be constantly on guard against giving away personal information.
