Don's Patch #65 from http://www.don-guitar.com March 1, 2007 First word, from Don: I'm sure everyone has heard or read about the controversy over Windows Vista. Chris Pirillo called it a "pig with lipstick", the Linux community is having a field day as more and more folks are expressing an interest in Linux and the folks at Mac have said they don't expect Vista to have any measurable impact on their sales figures while rumbles in some quarters suggest that the negative publicity surrounding Vista may actually be creating a modest boost in Mac sales. However it all works out, I think this year will be a very interesting one for computer Operating Systems. Don't hesitate to pass on your take on the subject and here's an interesting thought for you. How would you like to have a blog at Lockergnome? Here's your chance; read the second paragraph at the top of this page. http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/lockergnome Don Don's feedback form: http://www.don-guitar.com/contactme.html Lisa's feedback form: http://www.don-guitar.com/lfefo.html Our personal news page. http://www.don-guitar.com/babbleon.html Don's blog. http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/eldergeek/ Lisa's blog. http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/dirtgoddess ªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªª We all know that Windows 95,98, 98SE, and ME are no longer supported so you can't get updates right? Wrong! I stumbled into this and actually wrote a letter to MS Support to confirm it. Some Critical and Security updates are still available. http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/ http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/ There are even more updates on these pages but you'll have to read the description of each application to find out if the update applies to your particular version of Windows. http://snipurl.com/1bgmb http://snipurl.com/n8y4 Note: Some, but not all, are easy to eliminate because they specify which version they're intended for. As I recall you had to send them ten dollars along with your name and address to get your ordination papers. They just changed with the times and dropped the fee after they went online. That being said, I've discovered some other churches who're offering the same deal with, or without, variations. One of them is a wee bit tongue in cheek. Well, there's a very simple answer. Nobody bothered to check the oil. We just didn't know we were getting low. The reason for that is purely geographical. Our oil is located in Alaska, California Coastal Florida, Coastal Louisiana, Kansas, Michigan, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas while our dipsticks are located in Washington, DC. ============== Tips =============== Fix something. http://www.repairfaq.org/ Troubleshooting Windows XP. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm XP tips and tweaks. http://www.tunexp.com/tips/ Command line reference for Windows, Bash, Oracle, and SQL Server. http://www.ss64.com/index.html ======== Reader Contributions ========= Links from readers are always welcome and you can even write your own link descriptions if you like. It's amazing how many times a day we think of something that we'd like to explore in more depth, then something important like life stuff pops up to claim our attention and we lose our train of thought. I've taken to writing notes, then in the evening doing some research to find out more, getting the beginnings of an opinion on the subject and writing the results. On our personal news page, Don gives me the business for this amusing habit, but I don't care. There's plenty I can tease him about, and believe me I do. Never you mind, but there's plenty of material here. Point is, we'll always encourage our friends and readers to enjoy doing what we do; something different, every day. The world's coolest computer, without software, is like a car without fuel. It might look great, but what can it do? It doesn't matter who produces the software you love and use regularly, the developers of that software need your support. A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox: New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the unwary. Use a "throw away" email address to register, and be constantly on guard against giving away personal information. Use a firewall, and provide only the barest minimum of information on questionnaires. ___________________________________________________________ Subscription management for this publication is available online here: http://www.don-guitar.com/subsmanager.html or here: //www.freelists.org/list/donspatch
