Don's Patch #52 from http://www.don-guitar.com August 15, 2006

First word, from Don:

Do you, or does someone you know, play a twelve-string guitar?
If so, I have a gift for you. I have one set of La Bella, Silk & Steel
710-12L, light gauge strings for twelve string guitar. I'll send them
to the first snail-mail address emailed to me by one of my readers.
The subject of your email should be "12 string guitar" and of course,
as always, you can contact me via the feedback form below.
Why am I giving away a set of guitar strings? Well I don't own a
twelve string guitar, I don't want to try to sell one set of strings on
ebay and I can't bear to throw them away. As you can see,
http://www.juststrings.com/lab-710-12l.html
they aren't exactly low end strings so I'd like it if someone could
"get the goody" out of them.

The little message at the end of our ezine, from Bayard
Fox, tells you to use a "throwaway" email address when
you must register for anything online. Most of us find it
inconvenient to use web based email when, in comparison,
pop3 email is so convenient. Setting up an email client,
like Outlook Express, or Thunderbird, for pop3 email can
be fairly challenging but instructions are usually available
from the places which offer the service. Most everyone
knows about gmail, from google. They offer pop3 access
and there are detailed instructions on setting it up on
their website. We have some additional info on our
website. http://www.don-guitar.com/whygmail.html
Gmail is reliable, consistent, free of advertising and more
than worthy of use as your primary email provider so what
do you do for a throwaway address? One possibility is
Fastmail. They offer both (costless) and several tiers of
paid pop3 access. The (costless) version puts advertising
in all your emails but it's no more obtrusive than the ads
inserted by other providers who don't offer pop3 access
and you don't need an invitation from anyone to get an
account with fastmail. http://www.fastmail.fm/

============== Humor =============

A little humor courtesy of my
web sibling, Vinette Dephillipe.

While attending a Marriage Seminar dealing with communication,
Tom and his wife Grace listened to the instructor, "It is essential
that husbands and wives know each other's likes and dislikes."
He addressed the man, "Can you name your wife's favorite flower?"
Tom leaned over, touched his wife's arm gently and whispered,
"It's Pillsbury, isn't it?

A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up and down the
aisles. The sales girl notices him and asks him if she can help
him. He answers that he is looking for a box of tampons for his
wife. She directs him down the correct aisle. A few minutes
later, he deposits a huge bag of cotton balls and a ball of string
on the counter. She says, confused, "Sir, I thought you were
looking for some tampons for your wife? He answers, " You
see, it's like this, yesterday, I sent my wife to the store to get
me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of
tobacco and some rolling papers; cause it's so much cheaper.
So, I figure if I have to roll my own, so does she.

Last word, from Lisa:

This is the first summer I've tried gardening in Central
Texas, a proposition that gardening books and websites
describe as "challenging". Every once in awhile Don asks,
"Are you going to water in the dark again?" Well, it's
either dark or 104 degrees outside so, yeah, I am. OK,
testy moment over. It's just a matter of keeping plants
alive in the heat when it hasn't rained in Tow in a
couple of months. And a lawn? Sorry, grass is on its
own...

Adios,

Lisa

The most important people on the Internet, for you and I as computer
users, are software developers. The world's coolest computer, without
software, is like a car without fuel. It might look great, but what
can it do? It doesn't matter who produces the software you love and
use regularly, the developers of that software need your support.

A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:

New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get without
cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the unwary. Use a
"throw away" email address to register, and be constantly on guard
against giving away personal information. Use a firewall, and provide
only the barest minimum of information on questionnaires.
