I did report a feature, not a bug at (http://bugs.splitbrain.org/?

since it is not REALLY a bug.
you may find it easier to change the smiley string to :FIXME: or
something else that isn't likely to appear as a substring.
This MAY be a solution, yes. But i think replacement should be done on
word-basis only.

The problem with that is, that it generates problems at other places. I
personally often use smileys in the middle of a sentence =). <-- this
would not work, since it's adjacent to the . then. It's ok as it is now,
but the words should be encased by something that isn't often used
(usually :, like Chris Smith mentioned).
