[dokuwiki] hsc() undefined in RSS feed?

Hey DokuWiki gurus,
I have several syntax plugins that call hsc() to escape HTML special chars.
The calls to hsc() work just fine when generating the pages, but when I go to
retrieve the RSS feed, I periodically get errors such as:
"httpd: PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function: hsc() in
/.../spiders/lib/plugins/span_shorthand/syntax.php on line 80"
.. and of course, no feed.
Am I doing something wrong in my plugins? Or is hsc() really off-limits in
plugins? Thanks!
