Not really? They'd still be rendered with sizes like 1500x3000 pixels, which is vastly bigger any modern computer screen, even though they're only 5" by 10" in real physical dimensions, which fits quite comfortably even on a 15" screen. I can relatively easily use GD to determine which width and height to give the <img> element so that the image is resized on-screen to the right dimensions, but if I do that by postprocessing the page's xhtml, that will be less efficient than if there's an event hook specifically for generated image elements on the page.
