[dokuwiki] Smilies and special characters not working in pages/discussions

Hi,
For some reason nothing is happening when I am clicking on the smilies
icon or the special characters icon in the toolbar for creating/editing
pages, and also in the toolbar for the discussions plugin. All other
buttons work fine.
Can anyone suggest what I might try to get this working?
