Dear Parents,
This email is in response to rumors of an outbreak of lice within your child's
grade level. I want to reassure parents that this is not true.
I stay on top of any situation that is brought to my attention, including lice.
But if I am not made aware of a student having lice, I can not take the
necessary precautions to minimize the possibility of it spreading. It is
imperative (per DIS Handbook pg. 14) that parents who are aware of or suspect
their child of having lice, to contact the nurse immediately. In many cases
this does not happen and I find out after the child has already been treated
and returned to school.
At this time there is only one known case (made known to me yesterday at 3pm)
of lice and the parent(s) are seeking treatment for the student.
At the start of the school year teachers are trained on some of the most common
health related topics seen in the school setting, lice identification being one
of those trainings. The teachers have been diligent this year in helping assist
with suspicion of lice. While this is appreciated, it is still very important
for the parent to communicate their suspicions as well.
Parents will be notified if there are 2 or more cases of lice confirmed
concurrently in the same class. This is not and has not been the case so far in
CP this year. If I find out there are more "live" cases, parents will be
notified. If you are aware of other cases, please urge the parent(s) of that
child to contact me. Attached you will find a fact sheet on lice along with a
copy of the letter sent out to parents when lice is found.
Protocol has been strictly followed regarding this matter. Today, I will be
conducting a class-wide (CP-C) head check.
Any questions or concerns should be directed to the nurse clinic to avoid any
further miscommunication.
Sincerely,
