With the G'MIC plug-in for the GIMP (gmic_gimp), creating those
selections is actually a lot less painful than it is in Adobe Photoshop.

It is indeed interesting and the way he works with layers and selections produces results that is basically impossible to get with Lightroom: dodging and burning, as he stated, brings less control and requires a much bigger time investment.
I can see using that technique in the future for some very special photos, but I am already afraid of the suffering caused by using GIMP.
