Hi all
It's the WODC Chief Evangelist here but I'm not here to preach. My title means
that I'm responsible for advertising and reporting on the World Online Debating
Championships. I'm also a Masters student with an approaching deadline for my
dissertation who having a lot on his plate would like someone to come and join
me in reporting and spreading the gospel of the WODC.
I'm also looking someone who can provide some more in depth insight and
analysis with reports about the competition and the debates than just simple
summaries effectively and also provide a bit of background to the different
countries in terms of debating. However those people currently competing in the
WODC aren't eligible to take part as your probably busy with the competition
and also while I like the idea of an insiders perspective it wouldn't be fair
on the other people who are taking part.
The way this will work is firstly you guys have got to the weekend but
preferably as soon as possible to e-mail me on leo@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx to say
firstly that you're interested . If one person writes in and no one else does
it's a case of whoever applies for it gets it. However I've got also two tie
breakers in store for you. The first one is I'm looking for someone who has
experience in formal debating or the equivalent. So if you've either taken
part in debating competitions (WODC or not) or you're in a debating
club/society then please type it down as I don't have your CV's in front of me,
given that they're all in Scrutton Street!
The second task that I would like you to do is to please write something short
but at least a paragraph on which debate out of the First round debates of this
years competition do you think is the best and why? You don't have to agree
with the adjudicators decision on the debate you choose. However in your
answer I'd like to see you communicate clear knowledge about debating and show
your passion for it through your words and style. Basically please show me a
taste of what you can do in a short space.
In return you get a clever new title and possibly a profile on the site if you
don't have one , something extra to write about on your CV and the chance to do
some fun writing amongst other things on what is an interesting competition and
is really fun to cover . Also your services will more likely than not be
required after the end of this years WODC to help promote and write for the
next one, if you're up for doing so. No pay it is another volunteer position
though. I'll notify the successful person first by e-mail and then announce
them on twitter . If the Adjudicators get announced on the twitter feed etc as
they're a part of the competition set up so why not new "evangelists" too ?
Last but not least sorry for dropping this on you at short notice everyone but
I hope there's someone amongst you who'd like to join me in doing this
Thanks for reading and have a great summer
