*SBOE Updates*
The D.C. State Board of Education held its monthly public meeting on
Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. If you missed it, you can catch

The State Board welcomed a panel on Education Governance to discuss the
Board Governance Committee’s eight takeaways from its recent community
engagement, how to best translate them into recommendations, and what
structures need to be in place to best implement them.
The State Board also approved the following state resolutions:
- *SR22-12, On Early Literacy Priorities*
- *SR22-13, Recommendations Related to Public Safety*
- *SR22-14, On Approval of Amendments to the District of Columbia’s
Community Service High School Graduation Requirements*
- *SR22-15, On Nominating Bernice Butler as Executive Director of the
D.C. State Board of Education*
Our first priority is keeping our kids safe, I am especially proud to have
worked to draft and unanimously pass our resolution pushing for improved
public safety. Pushing for more funding for safe passage and the
coordination between our violence intervention providers and our schools
will be a key budget priority for me this year.
The State Board also won big at the National Association State Boards of
Education conference. In addition to being 1 of 5 state boards to be
selected across the country to participate in a Healthy School Facility
Network, which includes a $10,000 grant, DC took home the following awards:
- Policy Leader of the Year: KC Boyd
- Distinguished Service: Former Student Representative, Alex O'Sullivan
- David Kysiko Award: Former Director John-Paul Hayworth

*COVID-19 Flu Vaccine and Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Now Available at Ward 7
COVID Center*
DC Health encourages all District residents to receive their annual
influenza (flu) vaccination and their bivalent COVID-19 booster – also
known as the Omicron booster – at the same time. These vaccines
became available at pharmacies and clinics throughout the District of
Columbia beginning Wednesday, September 7th. Both the flu vaccine and
bivalent booster vaccine are available at COVID Centers in all eight wards.
The influenza vaccine protects against strains of the flu virus that are
expected to circulate this fall and winter and reduces your chance of
getting the flu or spreading it to others. The bivalent booster vaccine
provides specific protection against the original COVID-19 virus and the
newer, more contagious, Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants.
The annual flu vaccine is recommended for anyone six months and older.
COVID-19 bivalent booster vaccines produced by both Pfizer-BioNTech and
Moderna are available. The Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent booster is recommended
for individuals 12 years of age or older if it has been at least two months
since they have completed their primary vaccination series or at least two
months since they received a booster dose. The Moderna bivalent booster is
recommended for individuals 18 years of age and older if it has been at
least two months since they have completed their primary vaccination series
or at least two months since they received a booster dose.
DC Health continues to emphasize that the most important thing residents
can do to protect themselves and their families from COVID-19 and the flu
this fall and winter is to be up to date with their vaccinations. There are
many opportunities to get your primary series or COVID-19 booster vaccines
in the District:
- Visit a pharmacy, walk-up vaccine clinic, or COVID Center
- Make an appointment with your health care provider
- Make an at-home vaccination appointment by calling 1-855-363-0333
- Find other opportunities to get vaccinated by visiting vaccines.gov
