Greetings Service Ambassadors, Happy Summer!
I am excited to share with you the June, 2022 edition of the Serve DC
Newsletter.
#DCisOpen! As the weather warms up in DC, our team continues to find ways
to connect people to purpose. We are proud to partner with the *Deputy
Mayor for Public Safety and Justice*, along with other District agencies to
meet and greet residents and share resources at pop-ups across high-traffic
areas in all 8 wards. One recent partnership that demonstrates the power of
multi-sector collaboration in addressing our most promising
investments is *JPMorgan
Chase* to support our Summer Youth Emergency Preparedness Academy.
Additionally, we closed out our successful FY22 edition of the Serve 202
public private partnership series!
In the coming weeks, you will not want to miss the launch of our annual *Summer
Youth Emergency Preparedness Academy *and the launch of our *Volunteer
Generation Fund* cohort of nonprofits serving young men and boys of color!
We are also continuing to spread the word about our work and connecting
with others who advance volunteerism and service nationally. Our senior
leadership recently represented #DCValues and Serve DC at the *America’s
Service Commissions*’ Eastern Conference.
Another highlight was closing out *Mayor Bowser’s 2022 Spirit of Service
Awards* nomination process and reviewing 300+ nominations! We look forward
to seeing you for an in-person award celebration in July; details coming
soon!
Be on the lookout for in-person events, festivals, and gatherings and
continue to connect and engage with us as we continue to work together to
create *new, better, and different* ways to serve DC.

*COVID-19
Booster Dose Now Available for 5- to 11-Year-Olds*
The Pfizer COVID-19 booster is now available for children between 5 and 11
years old. The booster dose has been approved by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) and has been shown to help prevent getting
infected or having severe complications from COVID-19.
DC Health recommends that all eligible children 5-11 receive the booster as
soon as possible to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Any child between
5-11 who received their primary vaccine series on or before December 20,
2021, is eligible for the booster. In addition, children ages 5 through 11
who are moderately or severely immunocompromised are eligible for the
booster if they received their primary vaccine series on or before February
20, 2022.

if they’re feeling depressed, anxious, or just not themselves. The Hotline

wages to participating young people in Summer Emergency Preparedness

Director Squire and Donations and Partnerships Manager, Rold Louis joined
local civic leaders at a community meeting hosted by grocery chain,
Wegmans, newly coming to the DC community. The discussion centered on
sharing the values and mission of the District and nonprofit partners with
the Wegmans team, ensuring the start of a strong, community-centered
relationship.

AmeriCorps members and alumni from the DC-Maryland-Virginia area shared
their experiences at HQ with AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith and board
members. It was an engaging, dynamic discussion where members were able to
share feedback on how to improve service members' experiences as well as
what they've learned and liked about their service. One thing was clear:
making connections and building community is top of mind!

On May 18, Serve DC Youth Program Manager Adriana Bonilla spoke to hundreds
of girls at an in-person event hosted by Girls Global Academy, an all girl
public charter high school in DC. Girls walked away with an understanding
of various career paths and opportunities in the District.

For three days, Serve DC staff members Jessica, Thomas, and Traci connected
with other State Service Commission staff, national service program
managers, and AmeriCorps members in Burlington, Vermont.
The purpose of the National Service Training events is to support and guide
national service leaders in growing their resources, tending to their
specific needs, building their capacities, and creating a space for

*Public Safety, Justice, and Beyond!*
Throughout the month of May, Serve DC staff tabled and met residents at
community resource pop up events. To support the overall mission of the
Violence Reduction Focused Community Engagement Team, Serve DC staff shared
emergency preparedness and other resources.
It was a team effort designed to stabilize, partner, empower, and equip ALL
communities in the District with the tools necessary to increase safety in
their respective communities!

On May 21, Serve DC staff met and greeted Ward 8 residents at a stretch of
MLK AvenueBoulevard in historic Anacostia! We celebrated Ward 8 by sharing
resources and opportunities our agency offers, in conjunction with MOCA
staff.
Open Streets is a global initiative that offers communities the opportunity
to experience their city streets in a whole new way. Open Streets events
temporarily close roadways to vehicles to provide safe spaces for walking,
biking, skating, and other social activities. These help users reimagine
public space to prioritize people over cars, provide easy access to
recreation and other health-oriented programming, and promote local
economic development by helping support businesses. DC began celebrating
Open Streets in 2019 at the inaugural event on Georgia Avenue.

On May 25, Serve DC participated in DPR Senior Service Division's summer
kickoff event. Senior Fest: The Homecoming!
Our staff celebrated DC residents ages 55+ by recruiting senior volunteers.
It was a fun day of music, food, vendors, exhibitors, giveaways, and
opportunities to get involved this summer!

On June 2, Serve DC hosted an informational session in person at the John
A. Wilson Building regarding funding opportunity for nonprofits working to
empower young men and boys of color in the district!
Select grantees will receive up to $10,000 and have the opportunity to be a
part of a community of VGF recipients who receive technical assistance and
networking opportunities.

*Feed the Fridge* is an effort to bring nourishment where there is hunger
while helping small, local restaurants stay in business. The organization
does this by placing refrigerators around the DC metro area and paying
local restaurants to fill them with fresh meals daily. They also
hand-deliver holiday meals to seniors who cannot leave their homes, meeting
a vital need for our community members.
