Greetings Service Ambassadors,
Welcome to the month of July!
#DCIsOpen and we are so excited to reflect on our June activities and share
opportunities to engage in the upcoming weeks. June was a busy month for
us! Our diversity and inclusivity makes our city stronger. To this end, we
celebrated Immigrant Heritage Month, Juneteenth and LGBTQ+ Pride, launched
our 10th annual Summer Youth Emergency Preparedness Academy, spoke to
seniors and youth about service opportunities, added a member to our team,
and shared best practices on securing funding to entrepreneurs and
nonprofit organizations.
On the horizon we have a kick off event for the recipients of our Volunteer
Generation Fund, following the informational session and selection process.
On July 23rd, we will have a Public Safety & Resource Fair coming up where
we're partnering with The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and
multiple government agencies to share resources in Ward 8. Finally, I am
proud to share that a few of my leadership team members will be
representing our city and #DCValues at the national Points of Light
conference soon in Florida. Under Mayor Muriel Bowser's leadership, we are
committed to serving DC and sharing the story of DC and the over 700,000
residents who work, play, and thrive in our city.

*COVID
Vaccines for 6 Months and Up*
Children 6 months and older are now eligible for the COVID vaccine, and DC
Health is encouraging all eligible children to get vaccinated. The Moderna
vaccine, approved for 6 months to 5 years old, is two doses, and the Pfizer
vaccine, approved for 6 months to 4 years old (a Pfizer vaccine has already
been available to children 5 and older), is three doses. Clinical trials
for both vaccines have shown the vaccines to be safe and effective.

[image: mpd] *New Hiring Bonus for MPD Officers*
Mayor Bowser and Chief Contee announced a $20,000 hiring bonus that will
make the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) more competitive and help the
department recruit new officers, focusing on hiring more DC residents and
women. The new incentive is part of Mayor Bowser’s Fiscal Year 2023 budget,
which funds an additional 347 new officers in FY23 and goes into effect on
October 1, 2022.
Qualified applicants will be eligible for this incentive and existing
benefits, such as the $6,000 housing stipend. The bonus will be paid in two
installments: $10,000 will be paid as an initial hiring bonus, and the
remainder will be paid upon completing the police academy.
Mayor Bowser has made it a priority to fully fund MPD so that the
department has the resources necessary to patrol neighborhoods, lower
response times, make and solve cases, and stay prepared for a post-January
6th posture.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Serve DC and other District agencies met DC
residents and shared volunteer opportunities. 2 miles of the corridor were
closed to all motor vehicles as staff welcomed families and individuals
arriving on foot, bike, scooter, and more! Residents also had the
opportunity to support local businesses and participate in a range of
activities as well as educational and entertainment programming.

On June 2nd, Serve DC held an informational session for nonprofits seeking
funding and a network of organizations working to advance the lives of
young men of color in our city through *AmeriCorps' Volunteer Generation
Fund.

Serve DC recently held CERT training sessions for the Mid-Spring Cohort
between July 8 and July 16. Nearly 40 participants were engaged in topics
ranging from disaster preparedness to the organization of CERT, light
search and rescue, fire suppression complete with a fire simulation

hour, over 30% more than minimum wage. We are confident that with our
partnerships with the Department of Employment Services (DOES) and JPMorgan
Chase that students will learn to build and protect resilient communities,
create pathways to civic leadership, and develop career possibilities, all
