Subject: NEXT MONDAY! OPIOID Crisis ESCELATES! Health Alliance Network Feb

*Peace and Blessings everyone.*
*On April 4th, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was killed by a sniper's
bullet while he was in Memphis, Tennessee attending and providing support
to the Sanitation Workers strike. They went on strike to protest the
horrible working conditions that resulted in the deaths of two workers as
they tried to take shelter from the elements while on the job. Fast
forward, to now where the DC Sanitation workers are raising their voices
about the lack of ppe's (Kn95 masks and puncture resistant gloves) while
picking up feces, needles and our trash. The health of these
frontline workers and the conditions they work under seems to be taken for
granted. *
*At Monday's Health Alliance Network, we will once again speak with the
President of the Sanitation Workers Union (Local ) Kevin Poge and President
of AFSCME District 20 Robert Holingsworth about the conditions and what you
can do to support them.*
*On Friday, there was another tragedy involving Opioids. Ten people
overdosed and three people died from what is described as a "bad batch" of
Fentanyl (as if there are "good batches"). An arrest was made. For the
past two years, Opioid overdose deaths have almost DOUBLED the number of
homicides, yet it took this tragedy to begin to highlight the issue. *
*The Health Alliance Network's Opioid Solutions Working Group sent a draft
community resolution to the Chairs of the following Advisory Neighborhood
Commissions--7F, 7C, 8D, 8E, 8C, 5A, 2A, 2E, 5A, 5C, and 4D, in hopes that
they will adopt a more "bottom up approach" and highlight the issue more in
the communities that they serve. I will be speaking to one Monday
evening. We will be sending the resolution to other ANCs shortly. The
resolution is attached. *
*At our Monday meeting, we will have members of the Opioid Solutions
Working Group speak on the incident and on specific topics related to this
Opioid crisis.* *It will be an open discussion.* *The topics in order will
include:*
- *Education and Outreach*
- *Recruitment into Treatment*
- *Treatment Options and Physicians and Pharmacists Role*
- *What Does Recovery Mean?*
- *Infrastructure and Workforce Needed to address the Issue*
