*1. **The next Health Alliance Network monthly meeting will be on Monday,
August 9th, 12:00 - 2:30 pm. The meeting will focus on VIOLENCE (AGAIN and
again). The greek philosopher Aristotle said over 2,000 years ago that
"Poverty is the Parent of Crime." The PARENT of Crime-- POVERTY *
*As funding for current anti-violence programs has increased and new
programs, like Building Blocks, are created, violence and gun violence
specifically, has increased, gone unabated and has no real end in sight.
Are we truly addressing the root causes of violence, or are we just putting
a temporary band-aid on traumatic cancer caused by racism, negligence and
poverty? *
*Unemployment rates in black communities East of the River and
other neighborhoods in other Wards are sky high after Covid. During the
recession in the early Obama years, these rates were almost 24% and 20% in
Wards 8 & 7 respectively. During Covid (2020), where nationally, millions
of people lost employment, the DC Dept of Employment Services DIDN'T EVEN
LIST THE 2020 Unemployment stats!! We're more than halfway through 2021!!
Vaccination rates in at least 12 Ward 7 & 8 neighborhoods are still less
than 30%. (And now we have a mask mandate again!)*
*The Biden administration passed a Covid relief stimulus package, and is
trying to pass an infrastructure package. Where is DC's stimulus package
for East of the River? Where is the infrastructure package for Ward 7.
Ward 8. Ward 5. Ward 1? Can't we --the City-- carve out manufacturing
zones in Wards 7 & 8 so instead of buying solar panels, we can make them?
Instead of buying medical equipment, can we make them? Can we at least
make PPE's so we don't have to go BEGGING other jurisdictions for them when
the next pandemic hits? WTF. *
*President LB Johnson's "War on Poverty" approach with one-off programs and
policies that address only the symptoms of poverty and racism, was
criticized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., saying it is an approach "that
is both indirect and impossible." Instead of trying to solve the deep
problems of education, housing and support for impoverished people, Dr.
King said that we simply needed to fix poverty first. "The time has come
for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition
of poverty." --MLK, Jr. That was said 54 years ago. "Poverty is the
Parent of Crime." That was said over 2,000 years ago. The city cannot
continue to "gentrify" it's way out of systemic problems in health,
education, jobs, housing, etc.*
*Violence will NEVER be solved while we play the same game, by the same
playbook. We need to change it. Change the Game. End Poverty. End
Gentrification*
*Guaranteed Basic Income. Universal Child Care. Medicare For All.
Entrepreneurship and Job creation.. Affordable and stable housing.*

*3. "HER STORY MATTERS" is BACK! The Health Alliance Network's
premiere Breast Cancer Awards and Dinner program honoring DC's Women of
Color Champions over breast cancer returns in person (hopefully). We have
a tentative date of Saturday, October 30th at the ARC (Black Box Theater).
The date is tentative, as The ARC hasn't officially started reservations
yet, but we are penciled in! This will be our 8th year for this event! We
have much to do, so our SECOND zoom planning meeting will be on THURSDAY,
July 12th at 12:00 - 2:30 pm (see zoom link).*
