This summer’s Platform Improvement Project is underway! To celebrate the
occasion, we’ve given the PIP newsletter a brand-new look. Our goal is to
make it easier for you to track construction updates, meet the people
behind the project, take a closer look at special topics and experience the
project through exclusive photos and videos.
Construction Update
- *After New Carrollton, Landover, Cheverly, Deanwood, Minnesota Ave
stations closed on May 28*, crews immediately got to work, mobilizing
the construction sites, installing temporary shoring under the platform
edges for support and building access to the platforms from the staging
areas.
- *Once the prep work was completed, crews* *demolished the platform
edge and* *topping slab *(pictured below, left) on the platforms at New
Carrollton, Landover and Cheverly stations. Then, crews used large cranes
to lift old platform sections onto trucks to be hauled away.
- *Meanwhile, at Deanwood and Minnesota Ave stations, where the
platforms do not need to be replaced*, crews completed over 90% of the
mezzanine tile demolition, repaired cracks and completed demolition of
surveillance and speaker systems.
- Coming up, crews will fabricate and erect formwork, install rebar and
pour concrete to build out the new platform edges.

A Closer Look: Construction Strategy
When the Platform Improvement Project was in the initial planning stages
over five years ago, the project team developed an innovative approach that
allows construction crews to have 24-hour access to the work sites and
reduces the length of the project by up to 94%. That's a smarter way to
safer, modern stations.
