Thanks, Joel. These charges are outrageous, I agree. I still think suggesting
people go to the emergency room is a reasonable, if they can’t wait for us to
call them back or if they are having a psychiatric crisis. People may not think
of ERs as being helpful for mental health emergencies.
I wonder what others have on their voice mail messages?

Something to think about: for some clients, ER visits for suicidality may
actually INCREASE suicides. See recent research:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29369662. Sometimes it’s important to ;
question our assumptions. There is no evidence that being in a hospital
decreases suicide, and in fact people do commit suicide in hospitals. Calling
911 can be traumatizing or worse. Is there evidence that ERs are helpful for
psychiatric crises? I’d love to see it if there is.

In January of 2019, The Women’s Center will be hosting a 3-part financial
empowerment workshop series. The workshops will be led by volunteers from
Deloitte, and will cover basic financial skills including budgeting, credit
and debt management, savings, and investing. The workshops are free but
space is limited so interested parties will need to register to reserve
their space.

Inova' s IOP program would be a sound choice. Phoenix House also has an
IOP program, but I am less familiar with it. I used to work as a group
therapist in the IOP and other outpatient substance abuse programs at INOVA
in the hospital's Fairfax and Loudon offices.
