Actually it does default to what is current. When starting a new project, the default is sound on sound but you could change it and resave your normal.tpl file so that it will start in overwrite.

A basic question...
is there a hotkey to report what recording mode you are in at any given time? You know, Sound on Sound, Sound on Sound Punch etcetera. Or, is it simply a matter of, when in doubt, always set the recording mode before recording. It would be nice if the recording mode dialog indicated what mode was current instead of always defaulting to Sound on Sound.
