Actually it does default to what is current. When starting a new project, the default is sound on sound but you could change it and resave your normal.tpl file so that it will start in overwrite.

A basic question...is there a hotkey to report what recording mode you are in at any given time? You know, Sound on Sound, Sound on Sound Punch etcetera. Or, is it simply a matter of, when in doubt, always set the recording mode before recording.
