The external insert plug-in lets you treat an external effect unit as part of your sonar mix. You have sends and returns just like a regular software effect, but you route them to inputs and outputs on your sound card. The realtime bounce feature lets you mix down your Sonar project with the external effect as part of the mix, and you can automate the send levels going into the effect. I truthfully haven't played with it very much, but it certainly has possibilities.
