I think I need to make this more clear.
I have 8 mono channel inputs on the Presonus Firepod audio controller. I want to plug in a stereo unit such as a drum machine or even a cd player for example. The only trouble is that due to the fact that there are 8 mono inputs, even if the left channel of the CD player goes into channel 1 of the Presonus Firepod, and the right channel goes into channel 2 of the presonus, the left side comes out of both left and right speakers, and the right channel comes out of both left and right speakers. I want to be able to seperate the left and right of a stereo device for realtime monitoring.

The only trouble is with realtime monitoring. it sounds good but it is in virtual mono. In terms of recording: I can assign the left channel patched into channel 1 of the Presonus and have it panned left on a individual sonar track and patch the right channel of the stereo device into channel 2 of the Presonus and pan it hard right to another individual sonar track. This way after recording, I can play the tracks back and hear them in true stereo.
The question is: Is there a way that I can monitor the recording in stereo?

Any ideas would be appreciated! The input echo idea doesn't work.

I wonder if the Presonus Firepod just isn't made to monitor in stereo.

Thanks,

Stacy

I think this has something to do with the direct monitoring section onboard the Presonus and it's relationship with Input Echo in Sonar.

You need to disable Input Echo in Sonar I should think. I only ever use Input Echo when recording a live performer who must hear themselves with an effect or something whilst recording. I never ever use it for recording gear like synths and drum machines because direct monitoring is perfectly sufficient.

The Pre-Sonus doesn't allow for direct monitoring on specific channels, only across all inputs, so my advice would be to record all your electronic gear first using direct monitoring, then record your vocal parts later on. Don't try and do it all at once or you will have a problem.

Matt

Hi!
I have a Presonus Firepod audio controller. It features 8 XLR/quarter inch inputs and outputs, it's built super solid and sounds great! The only thing is that I'm having trouble with realtime monitoring of my mix. for example, I have 2 mikes in input channels 1 and 2 and have assigned them to 2 separate mono Sonar tracks. These monitor fine through the headphones or even with the monitor speakers in the next room. This is because they represent one solid (mono track anyway. However, if I plug in a stereo groove box/drum machine in channels 3 and 4 and assign these to be Sonar left and right trakcs, it all comes out mono or mor accuratley, the same in either left and or right speakers. If I pan the snare to the left and a hand clap to the right, for example, it comes out that way in the recording but the mix i=I'm, feeding into the Presonus Firepod comes out of the speakers sounding mmono and I can't seem to properly assign left and right panning with stereo gear like a stereo synth or the groove box etc.

There is no way to physically pan the presonus channels on the unit and there is no stereo/mono switch or button like on my Tascam US-122 audio controller.

I hope this is clear enough. It is a real pain to have to guess if the snare I'm panning to the right is actually panning all the way or if it's just slightly to the left etc. I can't really tell until I've recorded it and then play it back and listen.

Any suggestions.

Feel free to point out something obvious I might be missing. That would actually make my day.

Having so much fun recording!!

Thanks,

Stacy
