With regard to the Focusrite interfaces I will be putting in a rack… I’m going
to have the same problem one must usually get on low end items. Larger actual
consoles have a source switch for mic/line on each channel. This Pro40 rack
interface only has this on the first two channels on the front panel, and the
other 6 will be behind the patch bay where they will be hard to access, change
around, etc.
I suppose I will pick some hard cabled instrument channels and make the rest
mics. Hate to do this, but that’s why the patch bay is there, to make it easier
to plug things in and out.
It has always bugged me that the price for a tiny switch prevents these rack
mount units with jacks on the back from being readily usable. 6 more little
switches would have cost only a few more bucks
, and added very little cost to this $500 original price unit. I think they
could have found the space on the front somewhere, then both inputs to each
channel could be prewired to the front of the patch bay, or to other accessible
places in the control room or the studio area…. If that is the desired setup.
I know there is no way around this, so there really is no question here,
general or otherwise… ☹ Just the usual sad observation.

JohnIt’s funny how closely this unit resembles some of the PreSonus Firewire
equipment. It also picks its position by the internal unit ID. There combo jack
channels also do not have mic/lin switches.
