OK, in my quest to understand just how in the world to set audio levels, I have the following.

I turn input echo on. I talk into the mic. I get a level of let's say -13.5, I forget exactly. I then play a flute into the mic, fairly short sharp bursts of high sound, because I figure that's where it'll peek. Mic obviously distorts. Levels on Sonar's peek meter are now at -6.9. In case the hardware matters I'm using a Behringer, I believe the eurorack 1204.

Shouldn't I not be getting distortion at -6.9? i'd really appreciate it if maybe somebody could get together with me on skype and explain some levels, or here of course. If there's a decent tutorial about it I'll take that too, although recording stuff seems to mostly be about guitars and seems fairly visual. I think it's pretty clear I'm not getting something right though.
