Hey there Sharon!
Why do you have to go to an FTP site to download instrument definitions?
If you can't get them from Cakewalk, then either go to Cakewalk.net or the manufacturers own website.
If you're having any kind of trouble, let me know the particular instrument, and I'll help. I've been searching like a damned bloodhound recently, for the instrument definitions of various synths, and I've become rather adept at finding the little buggers!!!
Hope I can help...

Mike
