I think the Firebox is a six in, ten out. I don't remember right off the top of my head, though.
Anyway I figured I'd hook the mixer up to the line ins of the firebox and just connect whatever instruments from there. The latest VLZ, the VLZ 4 I think it is now, with the various channel configurations, now has onyx preamps. The Mackie onyx is not just a mixer but an audio interface as well, and I thought I'd save the extra $700 since I've already an audio interface.
I've got two vocal mics, eight drum mics, a guitar pickup, a Yamaha Motif which can get audio to the computer by either SPDIF or line in, and possibly a tape deck or CD player. While I may not have all this set up at one time, I know that a sixteen channel mixer would be enough for what I have and allow for a little more room without being hugely overkill.
The mixer I was looking at has sixteen onyx preamps, should I ever need them, which can also serve, if my memory serves me correctly, as line level inputs. So if I don't use all of the preamps for mics, I've got plenty of room for line level stuff if I need it.
I figured if I just plug everything into the mixer and send the signal through the firebox's line-ins (Think there are two stereo pairs but don't remember), I'd be set.

Hi Bobbi, not sure why you would just want to buy a mixer by itself as you would need to some how come out of your audio interface in to your mixer, then back out of your mixer to your interface. The firebox is a 8 channel is that right? I will say this. I have owned a Motu 8pre for years now and I bought a Mackie onyx 32-4 mixer and what a world of difference there was between the preamps. There is no comparison what so ever. The Mackie's preamps are far more clear and full than the Motu8 preamps. If I were you I would just get a Mackie Onyx 16 channel and go in to your computer from that. I believe you can get a firewire card with them as well. I have heard that the Mackie VLZ pre's are not as good as the Onyx. The Onyx pre's should be able to handle any mic you throw at it. They are also far less noisy than the Motu's. I go from my mixer to the line inputs of my motu and just keep the gain down on the Motu's pres. What are you needing to use ths mixer for? My question for you is if it is possible that the line inputs of the Presonus Firebox would not be able to handle the input of the mixer. Ideally, I don't want to have to buy another interface as this one has worked well for me over the past year or two, and I'm ratherfond of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" concept. Quite frankly, while looking at the Mackie Onyx 16 channel mixer/audiointerface, I thought it might be better to save the extra $700.00 and justbuy their high quality mixer instead, seeing as I've already got the Interface. I would hate to buy a mixer with high quality pre-amps and find out that those pre-amps aren't powerful enough to accommodate the mics I'm using, however. I haven't been able to find any reviews on this product as of yet.If any of you have had any experience with this particular mixer, I am interested in knowing what you think in terms of its performance. Thanks for your time and consideration, and I look forward to hearing fromyou.
