Are the correct ins and outs selected in Options MIDI Devices?  Has he ever
used Sonar successfully before?

on the options/global check  always echo current midi track.
or check if the input monitor  on the midi track is enabled. also go to the
midi track's  input column and select the midi sport input
and set it to omni.
