Winrar. You can create an executable with it too and the person on the
other end, doesn't have to have it installed. Plus, .rar is a better
compression format than .zip because you can create smaller archives with
it.

Subject: [ddots-l] Best File Compression/Archiving Tool?

Hi folks.

I need to take a quick poll here.

Which file compression and archiving format would you say is the most
universally accepted?

I'm wondering which format to formally support, as in, which one to use when
returning things back to clients.

It must be:
1. Free for them to extract files
2. PC and MAC compatible and
3. It must support the extraction of multipart archives, i.e. a larger
archive split into parts.
4. offer at least a CRC check, or some other form of file integrity
checking.

I was all set to go with 7-zip, a free zipping program, but it appears to
not support multi-volume zip archives.

thanks for any suggestions

Chris
