See the story of the Balibo 5 like you've never seen it before: through the eyes of their loved ones left behind. National Interest personalises the shocking story, the international headlines and the coronial inquest with the story of a mother and daughter still trying to heal. June Stewart is surrounded by ghosts - ghosts of her son and his friends, the ill-fated newsmen known as the "Balibo 5" after they were murdered in East Timor decades ago. Tony Stewart, June's son, and his friends haunt June's kitchen, bringing her comfort but also keeping her pain sharp. Her anger over what happened to her boy has not abated, no matter what the inquest findings are. Jane Stewart, June's daughter, wants June to talk about it, to get her feelings out once and for all so that the healing can begin and the ghosts can rest. What makes this production so special is playwright/director Aidan Fennessy’s personal connection to it: Tony Stewart was Aidan's cousin. A co-production with Melbourne Theatre Company.
