suggestions for the five newunderground stations being built as part of the
Metro Tunnel Project. By thetime the public submission process drew to a close
on 22 October, we had receivedover 50,000 suggestions.
The enthusiasm with which Victorianstook part in this process is testament to
the level of public interest andanticipation that surrounds the Metro Tunnel
Project.
We are pleased to announce that theGovernment has this morning released details
of the new station names, and thefinal choices reflect the strong desire from
the public for names that reflectthe locations of the stations, so that
passengers know where they are on therail network.
North Melbourne – Located in theheart of North Melbourne, near the corner of
Arden Street and Laurens Street, this station is named after the famous suburb,
which in turn is home to theKangaroos AFL club. The naming of this station
provides an opportunity to moreaccurately name the current ‘North Melbourne’
station, ‘West Melbourne’ – atruer reflection of its location.
Parkville – The station underGrattan Street, near the corner of Royal Parade,
is named after theworld-renowned health, research and education precinct it
will service.

Franklin Street, directly acrossfrom the State Library, the station is named
after this iconic centre oflearning and culture. The State Library is
Australia’s oldest and busiestpublic library and one of Victoria’s most

The station near the hospital, education and research precinct will continue to
be known as Parkville, whilethe station close to the Shrine of Remembrance will
be named Anzac in honour ofall Australian and New Zealand service men and women.
The new station in Arden will becalled North Melbourne, with the existing
station currently known as NorthMelbourne renamed West Melbourne to better
reflect its location.
In regards to many of the Aboriginalnames submitted, and those identified as
suitable through direct consultationwith Traditional Owner Groups, the
Government has indicated it intends toconsider these names when identifying
other elements of the Metro TunnelProject, such as the new public open space
and parks created by works aroundthe new station precincts.
