And I want to give a special shoutout to Spring Dew because her posts on FB
are some of the best FB posts. I love glimpses of your life, Spring!
Kate commented on one of my instagram photos, "what is that plant" and I
realized two things.
One, I really need to communicate better. I so often think of Kate when I
take my lunch time walks and take photos because she mentioned once how
tropical it all looked here. While it's not classified as tropical (we're
mediterranean), it really stuck with me. Not much of the world is
mediterranean. I take it for granted constantly. So, often, when I take
photos I think "I want to show this to Kate." Likewise, I don't want to put
Kate on the spot so she has to feel like saying "thank you," etc. That's
not what I mean! ;)
The plant she asked about today was an agave -- which are really amazing
plants. There are so many types and they are all 100% weird.

Two, a thing I've been thinking about is persuasion. Specifically, how do
we persuade people to care about the environment?
I've been reading Natalie Goldberg's book Writing Down the Bones (so good).
And recently I read this, "When we know the name of something, it brings us
closer to the ground. It takes the blur out of our mind; it connects us to
the earth. If I walk down the street and see "dogwood," "forsynthia," I
feel more friendly toward the environment. I am noticing what is around me
and can name it. It makes me more awake."
I know you all already care about the environment and so many of you
already know the names of things. But I was so happy to share the name
