cared so much about horses -- her own, and all others. She cared about most
animals, it seemed to me. I remember when I first met her, she had a big dog
named Tex. He'd been debarked by his previous owner, and I knew Rosalie didn't
approve of such things. Horses were her "thing," though. She was so
knowledgeable about them! I don't know much about her horse ownership prior to
her move to the east coast, but after she moved, she had at least a couple, I
believe. Such a horse girl!
I first met Rosalie in an online discussion group -- listserv, in case anyone
still uses that term -- in about 1996 or 1997 (somewhere around there). We all
talked about the trivia of our lives (e.g., favorite cereal bowls), as well as
significant life events (e.g., weddings, births of children, etc.). Rosalie was
always witty and kind, and SMART. Man, was she smart! She knew a lot about a
lot, that one. A few of us decided to meet up in person in San Clemente, CA,
where Rosalie's then-boyfriend (later husband), Dick, lived. We got to meet
Tex, too! The living room was full of musical instruments, including a
vibraphone. Dick knew how to play everything, and Rosalie was so proud of him.
The two of them were just lovely together.
After a meandering walk down to the beach, we lingered at a bar on the pier
with outdoor seating right on the water. The day couldn't have been more
beautiful, and I remember we all laughed a lot. Later, we hiked back uphill to
a Thai restaurant for dinner, then walked back to Dick's house in the early
twilight. It was a magical day.
Rosalie and I chatted here and there after that, and I invited her to my
sister's Christmas party. Being a friendly gal, Rosalie was happy to meet new
people, and she just always seemed to be 100% herself -- no pretending, no
self-consciousness -- just her own awesome, down-to-earth self. I really
admired that about her.
Soon Rosalie and Dick announced their wedding, and invited me and my
then-boyfriend. The lovely couple got married at the Baha'i Center, and so many
people attended! The dress code seemed to be "celebratory but not stuffy." It
was just what I would have expected Rosalie to want. Rosalie and Dick were so
joyful and sweet! The ceremony was amazing, and Rosalie and Dick's drumming
group played in an impressive entrance procession. Rosalie and Dick were just
gaga over each other -- it was written all over their faces. At the reception,
Dick kept cracking jokes: "Go have some 'srimp'! There's plenty of 'srimp'! I
can't say 'shrimp,' so I say 'srimp'!" So silly and cute!
At some point, Rosalie and Dick moved to...Nebraska? Later they moved to the
east coast. Rosalie posted videos (on Facebook) of Dick playing music with
friends all the time. I kept in touch with Rosalie on social media and email,
but I didn't know until last year that she'd been dealing with cancer. She was
pretty quiet about it online. I saw she was in an assisted living facility, and
Dick was in a different one. Then Dick passed away in November 2021, and I knew
Rosalie felt (because she said so) that half of her was missing. So when
Rosalie's friend messaged me yesterday to say she'd passed away, I was first
dumbfounded, then heartbroken, then a little bit happy for her, because maybe
she gets to hang out with Dick again. That's really where she belongs -- in a
place with her best friend Dick, LOTS of music, horses, and maybe some 'srimp.'
I'll miss you,

but I'll think of you often. Tell Dick hello from me, and then go for a long
ride on a beautiful horse. You're all healed now. Love you! [?]

I am unable to access it, so "public" may just mean "public for Facebook users".

I wrote a little thing about Rosalie on my Facebook page and made it public, if

It's pretty basic, but I just felt like doing it.
