Dear List: I was asked by Jayahandran Palazhy and the administrators of the
Atttakkalri Center for Movement Arts to pass on this exciting announcement:

N  e  w    D  i  p  l o  m a   P  r o  g  r  a  m  ;

Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts (ACMA) situated in Bangalore, India, is
committed to interdisciplinary performance work and is an umbrella organisation
facilitating and producing international arts events for artists and audiences
in India and abroad. Dedicated to the promotion of Contemporary dance in India,
Attakkalari will launch a Diploma programme in Movement Arts and Mixed Media in
September 2006. This is a pioneering project in India at this point.

The Diploma is structured to provide a unique balance of Indian physical
traditions and aesthetics with contemporary dance and new developments in
lighting, stagecraft and digital technology besides critical theory and arts
management. Academic subjects like art history, philosophy, pedagogy, and
anatomy will also be included in the curriculum.

In an ever-globalizing world, different physicalities and body techniques
increasingly influence and inform artistic practices. The Diploma will prepare
technically sound and strong performers adept in varied movement approaches.
The approach will traverse beyond outer forms of diverse physical traditions to
the very sources of movement principles embedded in them and focus on their
complementarity. Drawing upon the conceptual tools of philosophy, aesthetics
and art history in an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment, it
seeks to encourage students to evolve into creative, aware and thinking
practitioners of the art of dance and dance-making.

The Diploma programme will benefit from Attakkalari?s pioneering research over
the past years into Indian physical traditions and the wealth of knowledge from
its large pool of international artists. While the programme ensures a
stipulated minimum of technical prowess, students will be encouraged to design
their own study programme.

Besides the three-year full-fledged Diploma programme, students have the option
of a one-year Certificate Course (the Foundation Year), or short-term intensive
modules on light design, digital arts and arts management.

Reputed teachers of Indian physical traditions, contemporary dance, ballet and
other movement techniques, Digital & Sonic arts, Light & Set Design, Art
History and Critical theory comprise the regular and visiting faculty.
Choreographers and leading practitioners in the fields of introduce students to
contemporary professional practices.
