I might still be joining you on the bike, I've given up the idea of dodgy
French trains, the odd "maintenance on the line" means driving close by is
far more reliable but that means I wouldn't be able to enjoy the vin
d'alsace. Also, I'd really prefer to cycle over there.
Either way I'm sure you could team up with VC Peloton on the way home.
What are the chances of Thibault Pinot getting a local heroes win? Geraint
to win just to keep team sky wondering who the best rider is this year?

In case some of you are interested in joining me.....
On Wednesday 5th July the Tour de France comes close by and visits the
Vosges mountains. Stage 5 ends with a climb up La Planche des Belles
Filles.

Given the opportunity to watch the professionals on local roads I
intend to cycle to La Planche des Belles Filles from Basel, via the Alsace
countryside, and cycle back.
The round trip I intend to take is 183km with 2100M of climbing mainly
on quiet roads. Below is a rough itinerary based on the race schedule and
anticipated arrival of the caravan ahead of the riders.
8.30am - Leave Novartis Main Campus
11.30am - 1pm - Lunch stop in Giromagny and pick up picnic provisions
2pm - Arrive at suitable spot up La Planche des Belles Filles
3pm - Arrival of the caravan
5pm - Arrival of riders
5.30pm - Head back to Basel
10pm - Arrive back in Basel
The cycling will be approximately 25 - 30 km/h and will require
suitable lights for the journey back and you to carry enough food and
water, although we can stop enroute if need be. In case the weather turns
bad I recommend carrying a folding jacket (a few of us froze up the Petit
Ballon a few years back in July watching the TdF).
If you fancy joining me on this long day out to watch thin men in lycra
ride up a hill then please drop me a note and start booking your day off
work! If the weather really turns bad then I'll enjoy the race from the
comfort of my sofa.
