++++++++++++++++++++++++ THE CVILLE PC NEWSLETTER Special Announcement for Windows XP Users August 2004 ++++++++++++++++++++++++ The regular Cville PC newsletter is coming in a few days, but in the meantime I want to alert you to a major Windows XP update, the largest Windows XP update yet, just released by Microsoft. If your computer does not run Windows XP, this information will not apply to you. Windows XP Service Pack 2 will address long-term security concerns that have led to the epidemic of malicious programs out there threatening our PCs. As Microsoft puts it, this free update "provides better protection against hackers, viruses, and worms." I cannot say for sure what it will mean in terms of your chances of getting viruses and spyware after the update, but Microsoft has indicated that the security improvements are significant. In fact, some computer programs that access the Internet without appropriate attention to online security may not work after the update. (Don't be too alarmed. Microsoft delayed the release of this update by a month to work on changes that minimize the chances that conflicts will occur. Moreover, programs that do not work after the update probably were not safe to use in the first place; you should look for new versions of those programs.) If your computer is configured to download Critical Updates automatically, you are ready for the update. If not, Microsoft encourages you to turn on the Automatic Update feature by going to Start, Control Panel, System, and then going to the Automatic Updates tab of the window that appears. If you still need help, this link walks you through turning on Automatic Updates: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/windowsxp/updates.aspx Those of you with a dial-up connection may notice slower browser performance as some of your bandwidth is devoted to getting the update, since the Automatic Update feature downloads in the background when you are connected to the Internet. Two final notes: First, the update was released Friday, but a number of factors will affect when over the next week your computer will receive it. Secondly, as with many big software releases, Microsoft may not get it exactly right the first time, so do not be surprised to see several other small updates in the weeks or months following this one. If you are interested in reading more about the update, here is a link to an article from the Associated Press: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040805/ap_on_bi_ge/microsoft_s ecurity I hope this event goes smoothly for you!
